Silicomanganese

Silicomanganese

Silico-manganese is a ferro-alloy with a high manganese and silicon content, obtained by an electrothermal process. This alloy is used as a refining additive in the transformation of cast iron into steel and/or in the grading of steel. The presence of manganese and silicon facilitates deoxidation and helps to improve mechanical properties. Deoxidizing with manganese-silico results in a cleaner steel and provides a lower carbon content than with the addition of other ferroalloys. The addition of silico-manganese to steel also increases its wear resistance, making it an essential material in many industrial applications.

At the production site, silico-manganese is obtained by reducing the raw materials in an immersed electric arc furnace. The molten alloy is then transferred to a ladle where it is refined and degassed. After this process, manganese silico is ready to be used as an additive in the steelmaking process.
